The U.S. economy is renown as the largest in the world, considering that it represents about 20% of global output, remaining in the lead ahead of China. It’s mature and developed economy grows on average 3-4% annually with a GDP worth of US $19,390.6 in 2017.1 U.S. economy is known for its diversity featuring high-developed and technologically-advanced services sector, which accounts for about 80% of its GDP. The most lucrative sectors in the U.S. economy include technology, financial services, healthcare and retail. Despite the services sector mainly dominating the economic landscape of the U.S. economy, other sectors like manufacturing and agriculture remain to be the backbone, representing 15% and 2% of the total output respectably.2
Market Access Opportunity
United States has acquired free trade agreements with 20 other countries providing access to millions of additional consumers while continuously developing the business infrastructure to increase opportunities for U.S. exporters.3 The ease of doing business in the U.S. is supported by a regulatory environment that is particularly conducive to starting and operating a business. Among these benefits is access to capital, where the U.S. holds a wide range of funding available for companies, including banks, investment firms and venture capitalists.
Since 1985, over 325,000 M&A transactions were announced with an approximate value of almost US $34,900 billion. The year 2017 has marked a new record in terms of volume with 15,100 deals or a 12.2% annual increase from 2016. The compound annual growth rate (CAGR) for deal volume between 1985 and 2018 is a solid 5.86% with value growth at 5.32%. Healthcare represented the largest number of M&A deals since 2010, with 14.2% of the total deals and a total value of US $3,292 billion. The second most targeted sectors for M&A deals by value is the Energy & Power sector with US $3,078 billion, while the financial industry sector remains in the third place. The high technology sector leads the M&A activity in terms of volume, representing almost a fifth of all deals (19.9%) with a total number of 38,350 transactions between 2010-2018.4
